Secrets to the Grave (Tami Hoag)

"My daddy hurt my mommy."

The 911 call from a small child sends the idyllic California town of Oak Knoll into a tailspin. A brutal crime scene is discovered; the body of Marissa Fordham with her young daughter, Haley, injured but alive.

Sheriff's detective Tony Mendez faces a puzzle with nothing but pieces that won't fit. To assist with his witness, Haley, he calls teacher-turned-child advocate Anne Leone, who's already the star witness in a sensational murder trial.

As Tony and Anne begin to peel back the layers of Marissa Fordham's life, they find a clue fragment here, another there. And, just when it seems Marissa has taken her secrets to the grave, they uncover a fact that puts Anne and Haley directly in the sights of a killer: Marissa Fordham never existed.

This is the sequel to Deeper than the Dead. Click on the link to read my review on that book. I saw this book (Secrets to the Grave) while I was browsing through the Popular bookstore in Penang's Queensbay Mall on the day I'm returning back to KL.

I've been hoping to get the sequel after I'm done with the first book and the fact that it was on 20% discount for Popular members was a double joy for me. Hahaha!!! Once I started on the very first page, I couldn't stop. I would read hundreds of pages everyday as the cliffhangers kept luring me into what's next but as usual, the author won't be giving out the final truth so soon.

There were few scenarios all happening at the same time with different characters at different places and each chapter is based on one scenario. When you finished one chapter, you'll be taken to another scenario on the next chapter and this is chasing you to keep reading.

As I was reading this, the scenes are played out as if I'm watching a CSI series but it's nothing like the current CSI shows you watch on television because the plot in this novel is set in the year 1986 when technology was on the downside when it comes solving crimes. It is a real challenge to write a crime story set in that year, don't you think so? So, how do they solve the crime cases? Want to know? Read it yourself.

The plot is so twisted that you will be in shock when you find out who's the real killer.
